Today, football has grown in popularity in India. Due to this love, competitions and leagues are planned on a large scale in India today.
In the intervening period the popularity of the game of football had declined.
But now the golden days of football are once again visible in India due to growing football fans.

INDIAN SUPER LEAGUE (ISL) is officially also called as HERO INDIAN SUPER LEAGUE

Today it is the top division in the men's category in the Indian Football Association.
The league is organized in partnership with ALL INDIA FOOTBALL FEDERATION (AIFF) AND FOOTBALL SPORTS DEVELOPMENT LIMITED (FSDL).

Currently there are total 12 clubs in the league.The season of this league usually runs from October to March. All the matches of this league are played against every other club in round robin style.

As the tournament progresses to the final stages, the team with the most points will be the team.The club is declared the premier winner and the second winner is awarded the league winner's shield to play in the play-offs.

The next four teams qualify for the play-offs.
The season ends in the ISL finals, joining the play-offs.
This tournament was established on 21st October 2013 to promote the game of football in India and to promote it at the national level.

The league was started in October 2014 season with 8 teams.
The league was played without official recognition from the ASIAN FOOTBALL CONFEDERATION (AFC), the governing body of the game in Asia, due to some difficulties in the first three seasons of the league.

The tournament is structured similar to the INDIAN PREMIER LEAGUE (IPL), a t20 franchise-based cricket competition in India's major top-level league today.
At that time the season of this league was three months from October to December.

Further ahead of the 2017-18 season, the league expanded to include 10 teams, thus extending the league schedule to 6 months October to March. The league was also recognized by the AFC.

The league winner gets a direct entry into the AFC CHAMPIONS LEAGUE for the following season.

The ISL winner gets to participate in the AFC play off qualifiers.
A total of six clubs have won the championship since the league's inception season.
ATK (3), CHENNAIYIN (2), BENGALURU (1), MUMBAI CITY (1), HYDERABAD (1), ATK MOHAN BAGAN (1)

Mumbai City have won 2 times while Jamshedpur and Goa have won 1 time each since the introduction of the LEAGUE WINNER SHIELD which was introduced from the 2019-20 season.

Mumbai City is the only club to have won the play off final and league winner shield in the same season as they proved it in the 2020-21 season.

HISTORY:

The competition first came to India in 1888 with the first nationwide DURAND Cup in India due to the growing popularity of football in the nineteenth century.
So football exists in many forms in India.

The history of Indian sports is much older.
No league was started in India until 1996 when the National Professional Level Football League started. So before the national league in India most of the clubs used to play in state or country level competitions.

On October 2010, Zee Sports and AIFF ended their contract payments and marketing due to some differences.
Further, on 9 December 2010, he announced a new 15-years 700 crore contract with Reliance Industries and International Management Group.
